Learning Communities require students to participate in community activities and to take a supplemental course. Each community's programs are coordinated by faculty advisors and student mentors.
Global Village Learning Community
For students interested in exploring other cultures, studying abroad or pursuing lives and careers in an increasingly interconnected world, the Global Village is an exciting community to consider! Drawing on the resources of the Residential College and it network of students, faculty and alumni, students participating in the Global Village will be engaged in coursework, lectures, concerts, exhibits, faculty and social connections with others that:
- Explore connections among language, art and culture at regional, national and international scales
- Share disciplinary expertise within an environment that values a global perspective
- Aim to compliment existing cross-cultural programs on campus while encouraging formal and informal interaction among students, faculty, alumni and the campus community
- Encourage students to "think globally and act locally" in their community involvement and professional development
Music, Theater and the Arts Learning Community
The Missouri S&T Music, Theater and the Arts Learning Community is an outstanding opportunity for students who have a creative interest in visual or performing arts. This community welcomes both students who wish to continue their involvement from high school and those with interest, but little experience. Participants will be able to explore art venues within the campus and surrounding community. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and out-of-classroom experiences (such as trips to local art galleries and performances).
In this community, you will have the opportunity to experience the arts through:
- Visiting local points of interest with a focus on theater, music and art
- Meeting and interacting with campus and area artists
- Exploring on-campus involvement opportunities
- Discussing and critiquing movies, plays and other performances
First-Year Learning Community: Seeds of Success
The First-Year Learning Community: Seeds of Success is open to all students; however, it is designed primarily to bring first-year students together to create an enhanced intellectual atmosphere on campus through the development of a living-learning culture. This program is designed to create and foster a living-learning-doing environment that will sow and nurture seeds of personal, intellectual, academic, social and ethical success. The course introduces students to some classics of business, leadership and success literature, such as Stephen Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," and Jim Collins' "Good to Great."
In this community, you will have the opportunity to:
- Engage in short readings, discussion and debate on selected texts. Students will be encouraged to think deeply and reflectively about these texts, their meaning, and how they apply to one's life.
- Create your own core values, ethical commitments, life goals and philosophical underpinnings.
- Discuss business, politics and leadership, as it relates to current happenings in the news.
- Use tools of success, such as planners, calendars and journals, to promote organization and reflection.
- Participate in social activities with other first-year students.
